Great Ormond St Hospital and Specific Toothpaste Needs
Early this month I had the pleasure of visiting Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London to meet some of their Dental Team and tell them a bit more about Buddies Toothpaste products.
It was quickly clear that I had come to the right place. Even as I walked through the door, their Hygienist who had set up the visit explained that she was just finishing up with her patient. This was a young boy who hated the taste of most toothpastes, so she was wondering whether I had any product I could give him. Of course I was happy to oblige.
Later she explained that approximately 70% of all the patients they see have a similar issue. Hence why they were keen to learn more about using Buddies. There are other toothpastes available with great alternative flavours but these often don’t contain fluoride, which is what the NHS recommends. They were also keen on its low foaming properties as this makes it easier for carers when brushing someone else’s teeth. The fact that it sinks in to the bristles so stays on the brush for longer is also a benefit.
They suspect the proportion of their patients with toothpaste issues is so high because it reflects the fact that so many of their patients have special needs. There is a known correlation between this and specific sensory requirements.
