Most people will say that they brush their teeth to avoid cavities, have a dazzlingly white smile and fresh breath. However, the risks associated with not brushing your teeth go far beyond fowl breath and staining. Poor mouth care can have a profound impact on your health.

About 3-4 hrs after brushing your teeth you start generating bacteria in your mouth which leads to plaque formation on the teeth surfaces which is the reason why it is recommended we brush our teeth twice a day. If you miss brushing your teeth, you will have an overgrowth of bacteria in your mouth. When plaque becomes mature it is possible to inhlale bacteria from your mouth into your lungs where it can create problems such as pneumonia. Researchers reported that improving oral hygiene among hospital patients reduced cases of pneumonia by 40 percent!

Gum disease is the most common chronic inflammatory condition in the world!
If plaque bacteria is allowed to remain on the gums for a period of days it will irritate the gums causing them to become inflamed. You may not realise that your gums are inflamed because gum disease is painless.
Unlike having a toothache when you seek a dentist because you are in discomfort, with gum disease you may have it for years without realising because you keep missing the same areas each day with your toothbrush. If however you notice that your gums bleed and feel tender when brushed, this is a sign that you have gum disease (healthy gums don’t bleed). You need to continue brushing the gums in order to clear the inflammtion.

If you don’t reduce the inflammation in your gums you are at risk of developing other chronic diseases as harmful bacteria enters the bloodstream to cause infection or inflammation in other parts of our body.
